چکیده

Using zeotropic mixtures as working fluids can improve the thermal efficiency of Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power plants for utilising geothermal energy. However, currently, such ORC systems cannot regulate the composition of zeotropic mixtures when their operating conditions change. A compositionadjustable ORC system could potentially improve the thermal efficiency by closely matching the cycle to the changing ambient conditions provided that the composition of the working fluid mixture can be adjusted in an economic way. In this paper, a dynamic composition control strategy has been proposed and analysed for such a composition-adjustable ORC system. This method employs a distillation column to separate the two components of the mixture, which can then be pumped back to the main ORC system to adjust the composition of the zeotropic mixture to the required level according to the ambient temperature. The dynamic composition control strategy is simulated using an optimisation algorithm. The design method of the distillation column is presented and its dynamic response characteristics have been analysed using Aspen Plus Dynamics. The results indicate that the average power output can be significantly improved using a composition-adjustable ORC system when the ambient temperature decreases. The size of the distillation system is relatively small and its energy (mainly thermal) consumption is only around 1% of the system's input heat. The research results also show that the dynamic response characteristics of the distillation system can satisfy the requirements of the ORC system. © 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Increasing waste heat recovery from an internal combustion engine by a dual-loop non-organic Rankine Cycle

This research proposes the combination of a dual-loop non-organic Rankine cycle (DNORC) with an internal combustion engine to increase the output power of the recovery system by focusing on the increase in the energy input and system efficiency. In doing so, it investigates the strategy of increasing the mean effective temperature of heat addition in the high-temperature Rankine cycle (HTRC) (t...

Exergy Analysis of a Novel Combined System Consisting of a Gas Turbine, an Organic Rankine Cycle and an Absorption Chiller to Produce Power, Heat and Cold

The current work investigates the exergy analysis of a new system to generate power, heat, and refrigeration. In the proposed system, the heat loss of a gas turbine (GT) is first recovered by a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSD), then by an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) to generate warm water and additional power, respectively. In the ORC, reheating is used to increase the output power, the req...

Part-Load Performance Prediction and Operation Strategy Design of Organic Rankine Cycles with a Medium Cycle Used for Recovering Waste Heat from Gaseous Fuel Engines

Abstract: The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is regarded as a suitable way to recover waste heat from gaseous fuel internal combustion engines. As waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) have always been designed based on rated working conditions, while engines often work under part-load conditions, it is quite significant to analyze the part-load performance and corresponding operation strategy of ORC...
